"Don't pent it up, pen it down"
We are living in a digital world, isn’t it? From notes to pictures, planners to events everything is found inside that handy gadget we call our smart phone. Then why to grab a pen and paper? What is it that your old-fashioned diary has which your fully loaded smartphone doesn’t?
When you scroll through your digital notes, do you feel the same belongingness as you feel when you turn the pages of an old diary?
Those old memories that come alive as you flip through the pages, does your software documents bring the same smile on your face? Does typing on a keypad is as soothing as writing on a paper?
I guess not!! Words written in our own handwriting reflects us, our mood, our current emotional state, whether it’s a special date to remember or something emotional. When we write those words on paper, we also release our feelings and emotions. That is why writing is the most effective stress buster.
Not only that, there are many more benefits of keeping a journal:
Cathartic release
Stress is a word that doesn’t need an introduction! And stress doesn’t necessarily mean our chores, work or plans. It could be anything that is pent up inside, an unpleasant memory of the past or an anxiety of the future! Your notebook is a place where you can release it all, it’s like meditation!!
Clear your mind
Clouded mind can’t think, it needs to be cleared first. Once you put all thoughts on a paper (as and when they come), you see clearly what all is running in your mind. It is extremely helpful in dealing with a situation, to find solutions and in decision making.
Gives you a perspective
When you read through your old journals you realise how far you have, you see your growth and notice changes in yourself. It gives you a new perspective of yourself and the world around you.
Safe place to keep your secrets
Be it a confession or a secret desire, your diary is the best place to spill it out. It won’t judge you; it won’t lecture you and above all it won’t tell anyone. So, you can be truly honest here and unburden yourself.
Unfold yourself
Journaling assists you to acknowledge your hidden fears and innermost feelings. It’s a wonderful way to give yourself ten minutes of ‘alone time’. Spending time with just yourself resets mind and body. You shall be surprised to see what unfolds within.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Keep a small book handy in your handbag, laptop bag or your backpack, so you can write whenever you like.
- Try to spare ten minutes before you go to sleep. It’s the time when memories of the day are fresh in your mind also it’s ideal time to plan for next day.
- Don’t try to make it a daily task. Writing is not to stress yourself with additional work. So go with your own easy pace!
- Use a ready template or just start from scratch! Important is to write regularly and make it a habit.
- And most importantly, don’t limit yourself to just writing. You can doodle, draw, sketch, paint or whatever works best for you. Who said emotions needs words??
Happy journaling!!
